Does Caffeine During Pregnancy Mix?

Caffeine is one of our most loved drugs in the United States. When we consume caffeine during pregnancy it might not be too good of a thing. However, consuming a little bit of caffeine per day is okay. This is after a couple studies have inconclusively stated whether or not caffeine during pregnancy can cause a miscarriage.

Caffeine is one of America’s most loved drugs. Caffeine is considered a drug, because it is a stimulant. Caffeine is also a diuretic. Many of us love to get our morning fix of caffeine, we usually consume a cup of coffee, or perhaps an energy drink. Caffeine during pregnancy makes many women wonder how safe, if at all, is it for her to consume caffeine during pregnancy. This is often a difficult question to answer. Doctors are split down the center on how much caffeine during pregnancy.

There are many myths surrounding the subject of caffeine during pregnancy. Some of the myths are just that myths.

Myth Number One: Pregnant women should not consume any caffeine.

Fact: Caffeine during pregnancy should be between one hundred and fifty milligrams and three hundred milligrams. Health care providers are often split between how much is too much. However, studies have shown that when pregnant women consume less than three hundred milligrams of caffeine per day during pregnancy it has no lasting effects on her body, or her developing baby.

Myth Number Two: Caffeine during pregnancy can cause a miscarriage.

Fact: In 2008 there were two studies done on this myth.  However, the results were inconclusive. The first study was done by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This study concluded that women who consumed two hundred milligrams of caffeine per day while pregnant were two times as likely to have a miscarriage as women that consumed less than two hundred milligrams of caffeine.

In another study later that year conducted by the Epidemiology stated that women who consumed less than three hundred and fifty milligrams of caffeine during pregnancy were just as safe from having a miscarriage as women who consumed none. These two studies have different outcomes and the March of Dimes warns women that are pregnant that need to consume some caffeine should consume less than two hundred milligrams per day.

So, women should not consume caffeine during pregnancy. Caffeine is a stimulant that can keep you and your developing baby awake. There is also the possibility that your baby will not be able to digest the caffeine intake you consume. It is inconclusive whether, or not caffeine can cause birth defects. To be safest if you must consume caffeine during pregnancy you should listen to the March of Dimes and consume less than two hundred milligrams per day.  This is about the amount of a twelve ounce cup of regular coffee.
